On April 4th, 2020, the Nigerian Government issued a statement regarding the deployment of the Fifth Generation Network, known as 5G.
The Nigerian Government stated that they will not be going forward with the deployment of 5G until they have done their own research into the frequencies used.
According to the Government, there is much concern from the people of Nigeria, who fear that 5G could adversely affect their health.
The Nigerian Government made it clear that technological advancement will never overshadow the health and welfare of the citizens of Nigeria.
Here is an excerpt from the Government's statement:
"His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, places a premium on the welfare, health and security of Nigerians. As such, our desire for technological advancement will never be at the expense of the health and welfare of our citizens.”
Nigeria is one of the countries who has not yet issued any licenses to the Telecom Companies for the deployment of 5G. This is in contrast to the United States, who has literally 'fast-tracked' the deployment of 5G by allowing the FCC to reduce regulatory 'impediments' that might delay its roll-out.
Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim, who is the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy in Nigeria, issued his own statement ensuring citizens that their health will never be compromised for technological advancement. In his statement, he mentioned a three month study being conducted on 5G radiation by the Nigerian Communications Commission. The study began in November of 2019. While the study has been completed, the data is currently being processed. so no conclusions have been drawn as of yet.
According to Dr. Ibrahim, "Government will not act on the speculations only, but rather we will take an informed decision on 5G after due consultation with experts and the public."
Nigeria is not alone in its hesitancy to deploy 5G but joins a growing list of countries who have either banned 5G or have delayed its deployment until further research can be conducted on the potential health risks associated with 5G's high millimeter wave radiation.
