Brain Under Attack
Theodora Scarato, MSW, the Executive Director of the non-profit EMF Watchdog Group Environmental Health Trust and a Master Social Worker specializing in working with children, has written extensively on the impact of electromagnetic fields on kids and their brains.
Her work with children has revealed to her the impact exposure to everyday EMF fields has on children's behavior and function. Her research into EMFs has shown that these frequencies cause changes in both children's "sympathetic nervous system as well as the parasympathetic nervous system".
According to Scarato, "EMFs have been shown to open the blood-brain-barrier, allowing pathogenic infections to invade the brain, which can lead to PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome)."
Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS)is a relatively new syndrome that was first brought to the forefront in 2013. Stanford Medicine defines PANS as:
"Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS)is a clinical diagnosis given to children who have a dramatic – sometimes overnight – onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms including obsessions/compulsions or food restriction. They are often diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or an eating disorder, but the sudden onset of symptoms separates PANS from these other disorders. In addition, they may have symptoms of depression, irritability, anxiety, and have difficulty with schoolwork. The cause of PANS is unknown in most cases but is thought to be triggered by infections, metabolic disturbances, and other inflammatory reactions."
While traditional science does not currently include EMFs as a trigger for PANS, Scarato's work shows otherwise. Her work shows that exposure o common EMF fields is a trigger that can lead to many of the same symptoms as seen in PANS. According to Scarato, exposure to EMF fields from "cell phones, cordless phones, refrigerators, Smart Meters, wifi, baby monitors and fluorescent lighting" creates stress or disorder in a child's brain and nervous system.
Nervous System Disorder Symptoms
Disorders of the nervous system can be difficult to spot, as symptoms are often varied. Some of the main symptoms that are indicative of an imbalance in the nervous system in children are:
- Problems with focus and attention
- Memory problems
- Vision issues
- Inability to sleep well
- Constant headache
- Chronic fatigue
- Unexplained heart palpitations
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Eating Disorders
- Lack of Eye Contact
While more research is needed to back up Scarato's claims of EMFs as one of the trigger for PANS, there have been countless published studies to date proving that electromagnetic frequencies do impair the ability of the brain and nervous system to function. As the brain is electromagnetic in nature, it makes sense that electromagnetic frequencies would have an affect on it.
