Technology Affecting Our Sleep
Research has shown that technology is adversely affecting our sleep. And it is not just one aspect of technology, but several that are to blame.
By now, most people have heard about the deleterious effects of blue light on both the health of our eyes as well as our ability to have healthy sleep. Blue light abounds during the day in natural daylight and acts as a gentle stimulant keeping us alert and wide awake.
During the night, the absence of this blue light results in the release of the hormone melatonin from our pineal glands in the brain. Melatonin, in addition to being an antioxidant, regulates our sleep cycles. When the production of melatonin is diminshed due to late night screen time, you guessed it, our ability to fall asleep and to stay asleep also diminishes.
"Exposure to blue light at night shifts our body’s clock and results in a more alert brain that thinks it is daytime."
Brain Releases Toxins
Studies have shown that the brain releases accumulated toxins during sleep, so getting good sleep, and enough of it, is a very important adjunct to a healthy lifestyle. In fact, many would argue good sleep is the most important aspect of a healthy lifestyle.
Disruption of Sleep Cycles
During sleep, we cycle in and out of certain phases. REM sleep is the most famous phase of sleep, with the letters standing for Rapid Eye Movement. The REM phase of sleep can produce vivid dreams.
Research has shown that exposure to wireless radiation before bed will delay entrance into the deep sleep phase as well as decrease the time spent in certain phases of sleep.
This can result in feeling tired upon waking, as well as adversely affect our ability to dream.
Interferes With Dreams
Dreams, many experts on sleep say, are the mind's way of processing events and emotions. In a way, dreams help us release emotional and mental toxins that have accumulated from our daytime activities. So, any interference with our ability to dream, can be seen as problematic to our emotional and mental well-being.
Wireless Radiation & Sleep
The delay of deep sleep, as well as the shortening of sleep cycles, and the disruption of our dream life, are all a result of late night exposure to wireless radiation from our cell phones, tablets, computers, wifi and more.
